Water pumping stations run around the clock, often with no staff on site. A fire in a switch room or machine hall can leave a whole district without water. That is why the fire alarm here must be reliable, autonomous and able to alert the control room.

Here is how we approached equipping 7 stations at once.

The task

Equip 7 pumping stations in different districts of Tashkent (including central heating substations CTP-1 and CTP-2 and stations on Pushkin Street and Academician Mirzaev Street) with automatic fire alarms. Requirements: one approach for all sites, reliable unattended operation, backup power and data output to a computer.

The solution

We developed a standard kit based on Bolid equipment: an S2000M (Signal-2000M) panel with S2000-BKI display unit, an S2000-KDL two-wire loop controller, DIP-34A smoke detectors in switch rooms and control rooms, S2000-IP-03 heat detectors in machine halls, IPR 513-3AM addressable manual call points at exits, BRIZ isolators on the loop, S2000R-Sirena sounder-beacons, a RIP-12 backup power supply and a USB-RS485 converter for the computer link.

Cabling used KPSng(A)-FRLS, KSVVEng(A)-LS and KPKVng(A)-FRLS cables in conduit, clipped to the structure. Each station was programmed and commissioned.

The result

All 7 stations now have the same addressable system: the operator sees the exact address of an activated detector, the system monitors wiring and power, and data goes to a computer. The standard design reduced design and installation time and made maintenance easier — spare parts and settings are the same for every site.

Fire alarm for pumping stations

Pumping stations often operate without permanent staff. Reliable detectors (heat detectors in machine halls, smoke detectors in switch rooms and control rooms), backup power and alarm transmission to a control room are therefore essential.

For 7 pumping stations we used a standard Bolid-based solution: an S2000M panel with S2000-BKI display, an S2000-KDL loop controller, DIP-34A smoke and S2000-IP-03 heat detectors, IPR 513-3AM manual call points, BRIZ isolators, sounder-beacons, a RIP-12 power supply and a USB-RS485 converter for data transfer to a computer.

Should fire alarm signals be sent to a monitoring centre?

A fire alarm must reach a place where it will be received 24/7: a security or duty desk and, for some buildings, the fire service. This is especially important for unstaffed sites such as pumping stations, warehouses and filling stations.

Signals can be sent over a wired line, GSM, Ethernet or RS-485 to a dispatcher's computer. At pumping stations it is convenient to bring all signals to one control room.

What does it cost to equip several identical sites?

For a network of identical sites (pumping stations, filling stations, bank branches) a standard solution pays off: one equipment platform, identical logic and centralised monitoring. It lowers design costs and speeds up installation.

For 7 pumping stations, for example, we prepared a single resource sheet with a standard kit for each station.

Why a standard solution pays off

An equipment kit and logic designed once can be rolled out across every site. That shortens design, simplifies procurement, speeds up installation and lowers maintenance costs: technicians know the system and spare parts are the same.

All sites can also be brought into one control room and monitored on one screen.

How to apply this to your network of sites

The same approach works for filling stations, bank branches, shops, pharmacies, district schools, boiler houses and substations. We survey one or two typical sites, develop a base kit and scale it to the rest, taking their differences into account.

You get uniform safety standards across the network and a transparent quote for every site.

Key takeaways

  • A standard solution for a network of sites saves time and money.
  • Bolid equipment: S2000M, S2000-KDL, DIP-34A, S2000-IP-03, IPR 513-3AM, BRIZ, RIP-12.
  • Fire-resistant FRLS cable on power and sounder circuits.
  • Data sent to a computer over RS-485.
