Installation is where the design becomes a working system. Its quality decides whether the alarm works when it matters and whether it keeps causing false alarms.

Here is how installation works step by step, how long it takes and which mistakes to avoid.

How long does fire alarm installation take?

A 100–300 m² office usually takes 2–5 working days. A multi-storey building takes 2 to 6 weeks. Industrial sites and buildings that stay in operation follow an agreed schedule.

We can work at night and at weekends so as not to disrupt your business.

Is the cable run inside walls or on the surface?

Both are possible. Concealed: in wall chases, above suspended ceilings or in conduit. Surface: in trunking or in conduit on clips. In factories and plant rooms cable is often fixed with clips along walls and structures.

The choice depends on the finishes, budget and timeline. In a finished office we usually use neat trunking or run cables above the ceiling.

How much noise and dust will installation cause?

Most of the noise comes from drilling fixing holes and chasing walls. We use dust extraction when drilling, cover furniture and equipment, and clean up every day.

If the building is in use, noisy work is moved outside working hours.

What is commissioning?

After installation the system does not yet "know" how to behave. Commissioning means programming the panel and addresses, setting up the cause-and-effect logic (which detectors trigger which sounders and systems), testing every circuit and detector, checking backup power and running test activations.

Without proper commissioning even expensive equipment works incorrectly. In estimates it is a separate section.

How is the system handed over?

Full system tests are carried out: detector activation, signals to sounders and other systems, and switchover to backup power. Acceptance certificates are signed, as-built documents are handed over and the client's staff are briefed.

The system then moves on to maintenance.

What are the most common installation mistakes?

Detectors too close to air conditioners and lamps; ordinary cable instead of fire-resistant on sounder circuits; twisted joints instead of terminals; no isolators on the addressable loop; unlabelled cables; detectors on walls instead of ceilings; wrong battery capacity; no alarm transmission to a staffed post.

We find most of these when surveying buildings that move to us from other contractors.

DITI SERVICE installation stages

1) Engineer's visit and survey. 2) Design and quote. 3) Equipment procurement and delivery. 4) Cable installation. 5) Fitting the panel, detectors, sounders and power supply. 6) Commissioning and programming. 7) Full system tests and formal handover. 8) Documents and staff training. 9) Maintenance.

At every stage the client knows what has been done and what is left.

How to prepare the building for installation

Appoint a contact person on your side, provide access to every room (including plant rooms and above suspended ceilings), set aside storage space for equipment and agree times for noisy work. If a fit-out is under way, coordinate the sequence with the decorators so cables are run before final finishes.

Good preparation shortens installation and lowers the cost.

How to accept the work: what to check

Check that every detector is installed according to the design with no dust covers left on; cables are neatly run, labelled and fixed; the panel shows no faults; a test activation of any detector triggers the sounders and linked systems; and when the 230 V supply is cut the system switches to batteries.

Make sure you receive the certificates, as-built documents, equipment data sheets and duty instructions.

Key takeaways

  • Office: 2–5 days; multi-storey building: 2–6 weeks.
  • Cable is concealed or surface-mounted depending on finishes.
  • Without commissioning the system will not work correctly.
  • Most problems come from typical installation mistakes.
