How to Protect High-Ceiling Spaces — Warehouses, Workshops and Hangars?

Short answer
In spaces with ceilings higher than 6–8 metres, beam smoke detectors, aspirating systems and flame detectors are used instead of standard point smoke detectors.
Above 6–8 metres, ordinary point smoke detectors work poorly: smoke cools and does not rise to the ceiling. Beam smoke detectors (a beam between a transmitter and reflector), aspirating systems and flame detectors are used instead.
The steel structures of such buildings also need fireproofing — we have done this in government aviation hangars and at Tashkent Airport.
Practical tips
In high-bay warehouses, allow for racking that may block a beam detector.
Plan access to detectors for maintenance — a lift or tower.
Send alarms to security: warehouses are often empty at night.
